Bible Study - UNTIL THEN - Let The Love Flow

Sermon-Based Bible Study – March 14, 2021
- What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
- Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
- What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
- Read John 14:15-31 out loud from two different versions. Was there something new or particularly interesting that stood out to you from this passage? Did it raise a question or concern?
- Read John 3:16-17 and 13:2. Are you fully convinced that God the Father and Jesus the Son love you? Do you ever find yourself living like you are trying to earn their love or like their love for you has grown cold? Why? How does keeping their love you in mind help when it comes to your love for them?
- Read John 14:15-31 again. Chris suggested that what Jesus has to say to his disciples in John chapters 13-16 is also for us and how we are to live until He returns. What would you say are the primary messages Jesus has for us in this passage of scripture? Summarize a theme from this passage of scripture in 10 words or less and share it with the group.
- Based on this week’s passage of scripture:
- How does Jesus determine whether a person loves him? Is that different than how you might determine if someone loved you? How?
- Do you see your obedience to Jesus’s teaching as a way of showing love for him? Why?
- Do you think Jesus is equating love with obedience? Why?
- Read Matthew 24:12. What might cause our love for Jesus to cool? Why? This passage seems to be talking about the intensity of our affection for Jesus being diminished. But Jesus does not measure our love by the intensity of our affection for him but by our obedience. Does that change the way you read or understand this passage? If so, how?
- Read John 14:15-17. What does this passage say about when or how a person receives the Holy Spirit? Make a list of the things this passage reveals about the work and presence of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. Which of these is the most impactful for you right now? Why?
- What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word? Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
