Bible Study - UNTIL THEN - The One with Something to Prove

Sermon-Based Bible Study – March 28, 2021
- What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
- Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
- What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
- Read John 15:26-27. In this passage we read that one work of the Holy Spirit is to testify about Jesus. What has been your experience with this? How (by what means) has the Holy Spirit testified to you about Jesus?
- Read John 16:8-11. What is the Holy Spirit going to prove to the world or convince the world of?
- Read John 6:26-29. Have you ever thought that it was a sin to not believe in Jesus? How is not believing in Jesus similar to other things that we typically think of as sin, say lying, stealing, cheating? How is it different?
- Read Acts 2:1-4; 36-37. Make a short list of ways you see the Holy Spirt being manifested in this passage. Do you think the people being “cut to the heart” is a work of the Holy Spirit? Why? In what way is this a fulfillment of what Jesus was talking about in John 16:8-11?
- Read Matthew 5:20 and John 16:10. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus told his disciples that they would not see the kingdom of Heaven unless their righteousness surpassed the righteousness o the Pharisees. Why did the Pharisees think Jesus was unrighteous? In what way did Jesus’ righteousness surpass that of the Pharisees? How does Jesus ascending into heave prove his righteousness?
- Why does the work of the Holy Spirit described by Jesus in John 16:8-11 cause us to have a deep sense of gratitude? Why might our natural response be relief and prayer? What do you think Chris meant when he said this passage calls us to be witnesses, not prosecutors?
- What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word? Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
