Kids & Baptism: Tips for Parents
Tip #1 - LISTEN
- Ask questions and encourage by listening and responding.
- This time is for listening and gathering information – do not put words in their mouth.
- The goal is to understand what they know.
Tip #2 - PRAY
- Ask God to speak to you about your child’s baptism.
- Pray with your child - letting them lead and share what is on their heart.
Tip #3 - ASK WHAT
- Ask your child to tell you what the Gospel is.
- We teach your kids the Gospel is the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection
Tip #4 - ASK WHEN
- Ask your child when they met Jesus.
- Listen to their story.
Tip #5 - ASK IF
- Ask your child if they have talked to God about baptism, what did God say to them?
Tip #6 - ASK WHY
- Ask your child why we get baptized.
- Baptism is the outward sign of an inward heart change
Tip #7 - FOLLOW-UP
- Continue the conversation - not to pressure them, but to keep the conversation open. You want your kids to feel comfortable talking about these things with you!
- Invite your child to write a letter to God, telling Him about the decision they have made and anything else they want to tell Him.
- If you feel your child is not ready - you can say, let's keep praying about this together and talk about it again (give a timeline).
