Bible Study - ROMANS 8 GOD FOR US: Leaning into Freedom

  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced or witnessed his faithfulness since our last meeting?

  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?

  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?

  4. Read Romans 8:1-4.  Chris told the story of the escape artist, - Houdini who labored to free himself from an unlocked cell.  How are some of us who are in Christ similar to Houdini in the unlocked cell?  Chris said we are freer than we think.  What did he mean by that?

  5. Read Romans 8:5-13.  No condemnation in Christ leads to a transformation of our lives in the name of Christ.  What does this passage say we are free to do?

  6. What do verses 5-7 seem to be saying is the key to “leaning into our freedom”?  What does it mean to say that your mind is governed by the flesh?  What does it mean to say your mind is governed by the Spirit?

  7. Read Romans 8:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:19 and 1 Timothy 1:6.  Chris said, “We’re not on our own when it comes to making changes in our lives.”  What did he mean by that?  These verses indicate that we can have an impact on the work of the Spirit in our lives.  What are some ways we can encourage the Spirit’s work in our lives?  What are some things we do that might limit or discourage the Spirit’s work in our lives?

  8. Read Romans 8:12-13 and 6:12-14.  Why do we have an obligation to the Spirit when we are in Christ?  Why do you think Paul uses words like govern, reign, realm, master, rule and obligation in these passages?  How does realizing you have an obligation to live according the Spirit help you lean into the freedom we have Christ?

  9. In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week?  Will you share it with them?  How can we pray for that person?
