Sermon-Based Bible Study – December 20, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Who would benefit or be interested in hearing about that from you?  Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read Matthew 1:1, 16-18.  Jesus is called “Messiah,” a Hebrew word meaning “anointed one.” There were 3 roles people were anointed for in the Old Testament – priests (Leviticus 4:3), prophets (I Kings 19:16), and kings (I Samuel 16:12-13).
    1. Which of these three roles do you think Jesus was primarily set apart to fulfill?
    2. Which of these three roles do you think the Israelites of Jesus’s day were expecting “the Messiah” to fulfill?
    3. Which of these three roles do you most associate with the birth of Jesus?  Why?
    4. How does thinking about Jesus as “prophet” expand your understanding of him?
    5. How does thinking about Jesus as “priest expand your understanding of him?
    6. How does thinking about Jesus as “king” expand your understanding of him?
  5. Read Hebrews 1:3; 7:23-27; 10:11-13.  How is Jesus different than Aaron and the others who were anointed to serve as priests in the Old Testament?  What do these verses suggest about the priestly work that Jesus did on the cross?
  6. Chris said that at the end of time, the whole universe will declare what is really our only creed: “Jesus is Lord.” What does it mean as a practical matter to confess that Jesus is the Messiah?
  7. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
