Bible Study - FINDING THE STRENGTH: Prophetic Moments

Sermon-Based Bible Study – August 30, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced his love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-4. Remember that Paul is writing to a church and giving some instruction for their gathering/assembly.
    • What do you observe in the text?
    • What does the text tell us about the primacy of love (and loving others)? Why is love the motivating factor here?
    • How does a spoken word (or prophesying) help others? (see V.3)
  5. It is not uncommon for people to associate “prophecy” with predicting the future. But Scripture shows us that prophecy serves other functions (1 Corinthians 14:3). As Chris mentioned, this can include reading a passage of Scripture to someone to encourage them; writing a note to someone to encourage them with Scripture; or receiving a particular word from someone who is speaking to your situation directly (prophetic moment).
    • Can you think of a time when either of these things has happened to you?
    • Can you think of a time when you were able to share with someone in this way?
    • God can use us to encourage other people in these ways. How do we know that what we are saying is truthful, though?
  6. Read Hebrews 1:1-4. God has spoken to us through his Son Jesus Christ. The message of his life, death, and resurrection is the most important message that we need to hear.
    • How does the message of the Gospel help us and sustain us every day?
    • Is there someone in your life or circle of influence that needs to hear the message of Christ?
