Sermon-Based Bible Study – September 13, 2020
- What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
- Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
- What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Who would benefit or be interest in hearing about that from you? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
- Read Exodus 5:1-2. What is Pharaoh’s response to the request Moses makes regarding the people of Israel? What does Pharaoh’s question/statement imply? How does God respond to Pharaoh’s question?
- Read Exodus 7:17; 8:10 and 8:22. According to these passages, what was God’s purpose in sending the plagues? Who was God speaking to about his divinity through the plagues?
- Chris mentioned that the Egyptians had many gods and that they were clustered around three major forces – the Nile River, the land, and the sky. Skim Exodus 7-11 and make a list of the plagues. Which plagues show God’s sovereignty over of the Nile? Over the land? Over the sky?
- Through the plagues, God deconstructs the Egyptians world. What do you see Jesus doing in the Gospels that make it look like He’s undoing the plagues and putting creation back together?
- Read Romans 12:2; Ephesians 6:11-12. Sometimes we as people of God can slide into believing and aligning our lives more with the gods of the culture that surrounds us than the one true God. What are some of the gods of our culture? Which gods of our culture seem to be the most powerful?
- God will expose the false gods to help us recognize and follow Him. In what ways have you experienced God exposing the weaknesses of the gods of our culture? Have you ever had more confidence and reliance on one of the false gods of our culture than you did in God? How did that get revealed/exposed?
- What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word? Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
