Bible Study - RYAN RAINEY - Son of Thunder

Sermon-Based Bible Study – Son of Thunder - October 4, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Who would benefit or be interest in hearing about that from you?  Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Read Mark 9:38, 10:35-37 and Luke 9:51-56.  Jesus gave the John the nickname, “Son of Thunder.”  Why do you think Jesus did that?  Have you ever thought or behaved like John did in these situations?  Why do you think Jesus didn’t kick John out of the group for any of these incidents?
  5. Do you have a nickname?  How did you get it?  Ryan mentioned that we’ve all made a name for ourselves.  If someone were to give you a nickname that reflects your character or past behavior what would it be?
  6. Read Revelation 2:17.  Have you ever given a friend or loved one a pet name?  Why? What might be the reason for God having a secret name for you?
  7. Read Acts 4:13 and Philippians 2:13.  John starts out as a “Son of Thunder” but he became known as the “Apostle of Love”.  What do you think accounts for that transformation?  Ryan said that sanctification is Jesus taking who we are and making us into who we are meant to be.  What is our role in the sanctification process?  What do you see from John’s life that might be helpful for us in understanding our role in the sanctification process?
  8. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
