Bible Study - SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME - Jesus

Sermon-Based Bible Study – December 6, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Who would benefit or be interest in hearing about that from you?  Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. Do you think of a person’s name as having any particular significance?  Why?  Is there a story behind your name?  Do you know why your parents chose to give you your name?  If you have children, why did you choose their name?
  5. Read Matthew 1:21 and Luke 1:31-33.  What does the name “Jesus” mean?  Chris mentioned that the name “Jesus” was a common name.  Does that surprise you?  Why might God have chosen a common name for his human son’s personal name?
  6. The name “Jesus” means “the Lord saves.”  What does Jesus’s name tell us about ourselves?  Chris mentioned that understanding the name of Jesus help us getter a more accurate view of who Jesus really is.  Do you think of Jesus more as a philosopher, teacher, therapist, or savior?  What difference does it make to understand that his primary role is savior?
  7. Read John 1:11-12 and 2 Corinthians 9:15.  How does Paul describe Jesus?  How does one accept or receive the gift?  What does it mean to believe in Jesus’s name? Why does believing in Jesus’s name make us more humble? More hopeful? More grateful?
  8. Have you received the indescribable gift Paul refers to 2 Corinthians 9:15?
  9. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
