Sermon-Based Bible Study – December 13, 2020
  1. What is something God has done for you that you are thankful for or are celebrating? How have you experienced God’s love and faithfulness this week?
  2. Where are you experiencing stress, anxiety or discouragement? How would you like to see God move in your life or in the life of someone close to you?
  3. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Who would benefit or be interested in hearing about that from you?  Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  4. What is on your “wish list” for Christmas?  Who is on your “with list” for Christmas?  If you could be physically present with anyone you’ve ever known this Christmas, who would be on the list? Why?
  5. Read Matthew 1:23; 18:20; 28:20 and John 14:3.  What does the name "Immanuel" mean?  In what ways do these passages suggest that God is with us?  Chris said that in many ways Christmas is us being introduced to the “withness” of God like never before. What did he mean by that?
  6. Read Ephesians 2:13.  Have you ever felt like you were a long way away from God?  How does the fact that God came near to humans through Jesus, speak a word of encouragement to those who feel like they are a long way off from God?
  7. Read 2 Samuel 14:14.  What does it mean to say that those of us who struggle with a sense of worthlessness may not be struggling with a lack self-esteem but the lack of an awareness of God’s esteem?  How does Jesus birth, speak to God’s esteem for us?
  8. Read Revelation 21:1-5.  How is God’s “withness” in this passage different than His “withness” that we are currently experiencing?  What encourages you the most from this passage?
  9. What is a simple, next step you could take in obedience to what the Spirit is saying to you through this time in the Word?  Who would benefit, or be interested in hearing about what you’ve learned in this study?
